What is insomnia and what are its causes?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults get at least seven hours of good sleep each night. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, or staying asleep, or you have difficulties getting back to sleep after waking up, then you are a victim of sleeping disorders.

Insomnia can be categorized into the following classes:

Adjustment insomnia – Also known as short-term insomnia, this disorder is usually the result of underlying stress and normally lasts for a few days or weeks.

Behavioral insomnia of childhood – children as young as six months experience difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep and often resulting in inadequate sleep.

Idiopathic insomnia – this disorder starts in childhood and is a lifelong condition that cannot be explained by other causes.

Inadequate sleep hygiene – is a sleep disorder primarily caused by bad sleeping habits that disorganize your sleeping schedule.

Insomnia due to medical condition or substance abuse - symptoms that are caused by a medical or psychiatric condition such as depression.

Can Acupuncture help with insomnia?

Studies indicate that acupuncture can be effective as a treatment for insomnia.

During a review of 46 trials involving 3,811 patients with insomnia, it was revealed that acupuncture substantially improved both the quality and duration of sleep compared to taking medications, not getting treatment, or receiving sham acupuncture.

Acupuncture uses the principles of Chinese medicine to tackle subtle imbalances in the body that cause sleeping disorders. Using signs and symptoms that are often ignored in Western medicine, we can determine your internal “pattern” and use this knowledge to guide your personalized treatment. Apart from treating insomnia, we also address any underlying pain conditions that may be worsening your sleeping disorder.

Acupuncture points for insomnia and anxiety

Acupuncture is thought to work by increasing melatonin, a hormone that makes you feel drowsy. Acupuncture is also credited with improving blood flow to certain parts of the brain that induce sleep, especially when acupuncture is applied on the scalp.

We normally start your session by discussing your disorders, diseases, or ailments after which our acupuncturist determines which acupuncture points to use for needle insertion to get the most optimal results.

Are you suffering from acute migraines?

If you are experiencing chronic insomnia that impairs your day-to-day activities, you can seek help from a professional acupuncturist like at templ™. We specialize in treating sleeping disorders through personalized acupuncture services that help restore your normal sleeping patterns.
